Self Protection and Violence Prevention Training for Children
KIDPOWER safety workshops are specifically designed to be extremely effective in teaching young people (ages four to thirteen) how to protect themselves from violence without scaring them.
We have trained thousands of children and their families. Our central focus is to create an extremely safe (physically and emotionally) learning environment for children while ensuring high quality service. All instructors are extensively trained and strive for excellence in their teaching.
We offer training that includes practicing Full Force Self Defense techniques on a padded instructor as well as our Everyday Safety Skills workshops which focus on awareness and violence prevention skills. All workshops emphasize techniques that can stop an attack without violence.

KIDPOWER self protection and self confidence trainings for children are specifically designed to work with the ages and life situations of the participants.
Our workshops are interactive, based on the educational philosophy that children (and adults!) learn better when they are given the opportunity to practice, rather than just talk about or see, skills and techniques. All workshops involve physical practice, role plays and entertaining stories to teach skills. Our workshops are also short (a few hours to a weekend workshop) so they fit easily into people's busy schedules.
What Do We Teach?
We have many types of KIDPOWER programs, and each workshop is specifically tailored to the needs of the students. We train children to:
BE and ACT AWARE
Children learn the importance of walking in the world with awareness and confidence, spotting trouble far in advance, understanding what a stranger is, and following simple safety rules to keep them safe most of the time.
TAKE CHARGE
Children learn how to keep a safe distance from a stranger, how to deal with emergencies, how to "take charge" of a situation if it is potentially dangerous and how to use their voices and their bodies to stop an assault.
GET HELP
Children learn to yell "no" in a way that is effective both in calling attention to themselves as well as in scaring off the person who is bothering them.
Children also learn how to get help from trusted adults when they have a problem and to keep on telling until they get the help they need.
SET CLEAR AND APPROPRIATE BOUNDARIES
KIDPOWER teaches how to take charge of their own bodies assertively and how to stop inappropriate touch or attention in ways that are effective and decrease their risk of abuse.

Protect themselves from teasing and name-calling
Children learn how to deal with hurtful words and stop teasing and bullying from peers. Children also learn techniques to increase their self esteem by protecting themselves from the hurtful or damaging things they might say to themselves.
Different types of workshops to address your needs
Everyday Safety Skills
The majority of our workshops focus on skills that participants can use "every day" to keep themselves safe from abuse, bullying, harassment and assault. These workshops include boundary setting, violence prevention and awareness skills.
KIDPOWER Family Workshops
KIDPOWER Family Workshops are taught in a one-weekend format with children ranging from six to fourteen years of age. Individually tailored role-plays give children practice of the Everyday Safety Skills appropriate for their specific ages, personalities and life situations.
We teach children to use clear body language, set appropriate boundaries, establish and maintain safety zones with strangers, deal with bullies, and escape most trouble before it starts. We also help families develop a set of safety rules and common language for talking to each other about potentially uncomfortable subjects.
Most kids find the Full Force Self Defense practice with the head-to-toe padded instructor to be exciting and fun. At least one parent or responsible adult is required to attend a one evening workshop to ensure that each child's family will be prepared to support the skills taught. Parents are enthusiastic in their comments about this comprehensive training.

KIDPOWER Parent/Child Workshops
In these two- to three-hour seminars, KIDPOWER Presenters introduce Everyday Safety Skills and then guide adults in practicing these skills together with their children.
Parent/Child workshops for younger children (ages four to eight) focus on having fun while learning to be safe. Workshops for older children (ages nine to thirteen) help participants negotiate the balance between increasing independence and safety.
Some comments...
"My seven-year-old son came into the house telling me that some strange people were hanging around in a car outside. He said that he was ready to use his KIDPOWER if need be, but knew he should come and tell me instead."
"My daughter was so terrified after a child at her school was abducted that she ran home from school every afternoon. Since taking KIDPOWER she has felt safe enough to walk home."
"I had to drag my thirteen-year-old to the workshop. To both our surprise, we had a good time. I have much more peace of mind about letting her go out into the world now that I am more confident that she knows how to take care of herself."
